Emblazoned on each cannon were the words, “Ultima Ratio Regis,” the final argument of the king. After each piece roared, recoil drove the gun back, and crews sprang forward to ready the gun to speak again. Its thundering voice rendered words useless, as the balls that spewed from the cannons' mouths overwhelmed the opposing ranks, smashing, severing, gutting. CANNON fire deafened those near the guns with a noise more felt than heard.
